A central-air proposal for a house without ducts includes a new distribution system. The work is architectural as well as mechanical: trunks and branches need physical routes, each room needs supply air, and the system needs workable return paths.
Draw the route before choosing the box
Ask where the indoor equipment will sit. Trace how ducts could pass through available service spaces or the floor system. The answer should account for structure and insulation. It should name the finished surfaces that may be opened and repaired.
A duct design is more than a count of outlets. ACCA Manual D considers system geometry and duct material.
It also accounts for fittings and blower interaction.
Ask the contractor to explain the supply and return strategy for rooms with closed doors or limited pathways.
Compare complete approaches
Ductless equipment can serve individual zones without a central duct network. That changes what appears in rooms and how closed rooms are served.
Compare the spaces covered by each proposal.
Count the indoor components and trace their connections. Confirm the electrical work in writing.
Do not compare only the outdoor-unit model. Compare the disruption, distribution, controls, visible indoor equipment, maintenance access and finish repair required by each complete approach.
Photograph the building clues
Start with overview photographs of possible equipment and distribution spaces. Add the electrical panel, exterior walls and possible outdoor locations. Photos prepare questions. Final routing still requires an on-site assessment.
